Today, Anne-Marie and I went LaComa for the day to do clinic there. They have a nice functioning clinic run by a few Haitian nurses, and Anne-Marie has been trying to go once a month to see patients from that area. Dr. Larry, a doctor from Seattle (of all places!!!) who has been with us for a couple weeks, also went with us. The day was uneventful, until the ride home. (Seriously, it never fails). We were on the road from Poste Mitier to PC and noticed a lot of people on the road; a lot more than usual. We soon discovered that there had been an accident on the road involving a huge truck that had left the Beauchamp market with piles and piles of food and who know how many people sitting on top. Apparently it was a little top-heavy and hit a rut in the road the wrong way. For a moment it was a little surreal, until we found out that no one was gravely injured. In the middle of the dirt road was a huge truck flat on it’s side. The load spilled all over and a mass of people wailing like someone had died. We stopped and ran to see if everyone was ok. Luckily there was only one woman who had broken her leg and after we returned to the car, we discovered that someone had put her in the back of our car. Anne-Marie wanted to help, but knew she had to go to Port du Paix to the big hospital (we could see the bone). That’s when it got a little dicey. Some people started to get mad when we said we couldn’t drive all the way back to PdP and that we would NOT give them money to transport her there. Geez…they see the white skin and expect a lot. After a lot of deliberation, a few tempers flaring, drama, drama, and more drama…we decided to leave. We could squeeze by the accident, luckily. It ended up that a tap tap driver that was there would take her to the hospital.
