- Haitians know the true meaning of economizing space. If you’ve ever set foot in the country you already know this. Haitians really know that a small Toyota truck is capable of holding 26 Haitians, 3 goats, a couple baskets full of chickens and everyone’s luggage strapped over the sides. Today I saw a donkey… maybe… I couldn’t actually see what animal was below the huge mass of dried palm grass that was 3 times as tall as the animal.
-The places I see chickens: making circles around our house looking for something to eat and people to wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning, grrr. In my room when I leave the door open. Up a tree. Running away from Lilene - one of the Haitian girls living here at the guesthouse - trying to escape a poor fate. In a pot of boiling water, feathers and all…thank you Lilene…
-What I saw at the Passe Catabois market today: reams of plantains, various fried food, piles of beans, rice, cornmeal, dinnerware made in China, cabbage, various parts of a goat killed early this morning including the heart, liver, and skull (yes all for sale to eat), red wine that was made in the Dominican, and dirt cookies.
- So this guy walks into a doctor’s office, a Haitian guy, all mangled and legs broken. “What happened?” asks the doctor. “Oh I just fell out of my garden!”
Thank you Jeb.
