And...Two Weeks Done

Friday August 12, 2011

Friday afternoon. Week two of camp done. Jou yo ap kouri. I’m not sure how this time is running by, but the weekend is already here again; I’m a little shocked. Only one more week of camp to go…

This week of camp went well. It looked like the kids had fun and really got into the stories and crafts. Like today, when Lazarus rose from the dead in our skit, everyone broke out in screams and laughter! A little hyper, yes, but oh so fun.

Tuesday night, Jackie, the Dutch nurse here, got a call that Dr. Michael and Anne-Marie were going to do a C-section. So Leah and I ran down with her to see if we could help. It was a good thing because they did end up needing a lot of hands. It all happened pretty quickly and was all so official in the new operating room. After the spinal, Dr. Michael got the baby out quickly and handed him to me. His whole face was swollen and bruised due to the difficult labor the mother had been in all day. He didn’t have a heartbeat nor was breathing so Anne-Marie and I had to work on him for a bit before he came around, which he did slowly. It was nerve-wracking and I was praying the whole time. The whole experience was mind boggling for me as the operating room in the hospital functioning in this capacity is something I have never yet seen in Passe Catabois. Exciting to say the least. So far the mother and baby seem to be doing ok. It was a good ending to this day that started so heavy as a prominent person in the town passed away over the weekend. The funeral had been that morning, so the whole town was full of music and wailing through the night before and into the morning. And so, started the day with death, ended the day with life…

Other than that, it’s been more of the same: Ti coze here, ti coze there… Sweating out of every pore, even your big toe… Having such good time just sitting with people, Blans and Haitians alike… Enjoying time with our “camp helpers”, some young adults who really have potential to be great leaders, which that in itself brings hope even if nothing else takes with these efforts… Yesterday I tried to play soccer with all the boys and Leah, which was way fun I’m not gonna lie, despite my horrid skills… And not so much enjoying our multiple visits from our friends, the tarantulas, who have invited themselves inside the house, which is actually not ok… Leah continues to be my rock and hopefully I can be something of hers, which is the goal… And… still cuddling our fans at night. Yesssssssss.
